We’ve all heard people say, “I’d never…”

• “I’d never cheat on my spouse.”
• “I’d never lie to protect myself.”
• “I’d never walk away from the faith.”
• “I’d never do that.”

And yet, life has a way of humbling us. Under enough pressure, fear, temptation, or exhaustion, people sometimes do the very thing they once insisted they’d never do. We often overestimate our own strength and underestimate the power of temptation.

Peter made one of those “I’d never…” statements. 

Let’s go back about eight hours earlier.

Jesus and his disciples are gathered around the table, celebrating the Passover. During the meal, Jesus tells them that the time has come for him to leave. And he warns them that they are about to be scattered. They will all fall away.

But Peter can’t imagine that happening.

With all the confidence in the world, he declares, “I will lay down my life for you.

In other words, “I’d never leave you. I’d never abandon you. I’d die for you.”

Jesus gently but firmly responds, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.”.

Peter didn’t believe it. He was certain that Jesus had misjudged him. But Jesus knew Peter better than Peter knew himself.

Now, only eight hours later, the man who said, “I will lay down my life for you,” is denying that he even knows Jesus.

In the span of one night, Peter goes from, “I will lay down my life for you,” to, “I am not his disciple.”

It’s a heartbreaking fall. But it isn’t the end of Peter’s story.

Peter’s story moves from spectacular failure to gracious restoration. And that’s good news for us. Because if you've ever been ashamed to speak up for Christ, if you've ever let fear silence your witness, if you’ve ever failed to live consistently as a follower of Jesus, then Peter’s story can be your story.
