The Sword and the Cup

June 28, 2026 Speaker: Jonathan McLeod Series: The Gospel of John

Scripture: John 18:1–11

Think about the way we expect someone to respond when they're about to be arrested. They run. They hide. They change their identity. They slip away in the night.

History is full of famous fugitives who spent years avoiding capture. Some changed their names. Some fled to other countries. Some lived in hiding for decades.

That's what we expect.

But John 18 is unlike any arrest scene in history.

Jesus doesn't hide. He doesn't run. He doesn't deny who he is. He doesn't even wait for the soldiers to find him. He steps toward them.

It's almost as though he's the one in charge.

Because He is.

This isn't the story of a man who couldn't escape the cross. It's the story of a Saviour who wouldn't.
