When Faith Gets Costly

Worthwhile things often come with a cost.
If you play sports long enough, you may deal with injury, soreness, or setbacks. If you take up a hobby, it will cost you time, money, and effort. Building a career often requires long hours, discipline, and sacrifice. Raising a family demands patience, sleepless nights, and selflessness. Almost anything valuable in life asks something from us.
We understand that principle in nearly every area of life: if something matters, there is usually a price attached to it.
Yet sometimes people assume following Jesus should be different—that faith should make life easier, smoother, and free from hardship. But Jesus never sold discipleship that way.
In John 16, Jesus is preparing his disciples for a difficult road ahead. He has just told them that the world will hate them, oppose them, and mistreat them because they belong to him. Jesus doesn’t hide the cost of following him. He tells the truth in order to keep his people steady. He warns them ahead of time so they will not be shocked when faith becomes costly.
