Greater Works and Answered Prayer

Topic: Prayer Scripture: John 14:12–14
In John 14:12-14, Jesus gives us two amazing promises:
- Whoever believes in him will do greater works than he did.
- Whatever we ask in his name, he will do it.
Greater works than Jesus? Whatever we ask? When we hear promises like these, they might sound too good to be true.
We live in a world full of promises that oversell and underdeliver. Promises like …
- Work from home two hours a day and make six figures.
- Lose 30 pounds in 30 days without changing your diet.
- Find your soulmate with this compatibility quiz.
- Cure every illness naturally with this ancient secret.
- If you have enough faith, nothing painful will touch your life.
We’ve learned to be cautious. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
So what should we make of promises like these from the lips of our Lord? Are these promises too good to be true?
As we come to this passage, I want us to wrestle with two questions:
How should we understand these amazing promises? And how should we respond to them?
