This is the sixth of seven “I Am” statements in the Gospel of John.

Throughout this Gospel, Jesus has been revealing who he is — not merely what he does, but who he is.

He is “the way, and the truth, and the life.” There are three parts to that statement. But before we take them one by one, notice something essential.

Jesus doesn’t just say he shows the way. He says he is the way. He doesn’t just say he teaches the truth. He says he is the truth. He doesn’t just say he gives life. He says he is the life.

So let’s consider each part carefully — the way, the truth, and the life.
