Greater Than Abraham

Topic: Jesus Scripture: John 8:48–59
In John 8, we encounter what might be the most dramatic mic drop in all of history.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “mic drop” before. It refers to a bold or definitive statement that ends a conversation. It’s the kind of line that leaves everyone speechless. When a mic drop happens, you don’t respond. You just pick your jaw up off the ground.
That’s exactly what happens in this exchange between Jesus and the Jewish leaders.
They’re arguing with him, mocking him for claiming to be greater than Abraham. “Who do you think you are,” they sneer. And in response, Jesus delivers a line that is short, shocking, and eternally significant. He says,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Mic dropped. Conversation over. Except, instead of applause, there’s outrage.
Jesus dropped the mic, and his enemies picked up stones.
