The Gospel of John contains a purpose statement in 20:30-31: "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." There’s a disagreement among commentators about the correct tense of “believe.” Does John mean “so that you may come to believe”? Or does he mean “so that you may continue to believe”? Regardless of which view is the correct one, it's clear that the Gospel of John encourages both kinds of faith.
